A simple way to determine if a book is too hard for your child

One of the most common mistakes I see in young readers is picking out books that are too difficult. There is no advantage for children to read difficult books. The true advantage is in quantity. Many librarians recommend the following rule for picking out appropriate books:

The 5-finger rule
1. Pick out a book.
2. Turn to any page.
3. Read the page aloud.
4. If you miss 5 or more words on the page, put it back and get an easier book.

There you go! That's not too difficult, is it? Next time, I'll go over a simple way to determine if a book is too easy for your child!

Happy reading,
Susanne
