Three Types of Readers

Aside from the so-called “normal” readers, there are 3 main types of readers.

1. reluctant – children that are capable of reading but don’t desire to read

  • low confidence level
  • don’t know how to find appropriate books (interest and/or ability)
  • bored during required reading
  • do not read for pleasure

2. precocious – children that read significantly above grade level

  • high confidence level
  • find books that may be inappropriate for their age
  • bore quickly with “easy” books
  • disregard for boundaries in reading

3. delayed – children that are not reading at grade level

  • low confidence level
  • desire to read exceeds ability to read
  • frustrated due to inability to read at an appropriate level

I am working on a list that should help each type of reader. Our goal is to inspire life-long reading. With the quality and quantity of books available, we can find a book for EVERY reader. Please notice, my goal is for the child to read at grade level. There is no advantage for your child to read above grade level. In closing, I recommend the book “Thank You, Mr. Falker”. It is an autobiography by famed children’s author Patricia Polacco and chronicles her struggle to read. http://www.patriciapolacco.com/books/falker/falker_index.html

Happy Reading! Susanne
